Help Rotary Scout Reservation Build A STEM Center

Twin Rivers Council and the Thunderbird Club, seeks your generous support to help fund the development of the John E Tutein STEM Center at Rotary Scout Reservation.

The stem center will serve as a summer nature / stem center and year round training facility. This will allow dormitory building such as Jeff Uline and Seneca Lodges to be available for camping each weekend. The building’s southern orientation will allow it to be primarily solar powered with back-up power supplied from Seneca Lodge. The building has four covered porch presentation areas plus one interior presentation area that can be divided into two or expanded to porch areas. This will provide great flexibility for a variety of program types and number of participants. The interior space will house static displays, lab tables, and laptops / tablets. The building will have seasonal water with a flush toilet station for year round use.

Why a STEM Center?

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is part of an initiative the Boy Scouts of America has taken on to encourage the natural curiosity of youth members and their sense of wonder about these fields.  Fostering a strong STEM education is our best opportunity to boost the spirit of innovation and encourage critical thinking skills through fun and creative activities.

Locally, we launched the first STEM Week summer camp program in the Twin Rivers Council at Rotary Scout Reservation in 2014.  In addition to the traditional summer outdoor program, Scouts who attended STEM Week were able to earn merit badges in engaging subjects such as Chemistry, Space Exploration, Aviation, and Game Design. Each merit badge was led by an adult STEM professional or hobbyist who was able to share his skills and experience with eager Scouts.

The highly successful STEM Week program has continued annually, with new merit badges offered each year, including Programming, Digital Technology, Engineering, Electricity, Surveying, Chess, Nuclear Science and Entrepreneurship, among others.

In order to support an expansion of the one-week-a-year STEM program at camp, Rotary Scout Reservation has committed to investing in a dedicated STEM facility, the John E.Tutein STEM Center, named after a devoted camp staff member of over 50 years and STEM professional.  Construction of the Tutein STEM Center will allow us to safely house materials and equipment for an expanded program and provide collaboration and laboratory space for Scouts.  With the Tutein STEM Center we will be able to build upon our existing program and expand into activities we are not currently able to support, such as the popular field of robotics.  The Center will also support adult training programs for Scouters.
