OA Unit Elections Under Way

The Naxa Nimat Chapter of Kittan Lodge has begun conducting its annual Unit Elections for new members, so be sure to schedule you unit's date before the March 31 deadline.

Please contact Naxa Nimat Troop Elections Advisor, Scott Kilbourn, to schedule you troop election prior to March 31.  His contact information is oldcabin@nycap.rr.comExternal Link or 518-641-9768.

Since 1915, the Order of the Arrow has served as the BSA's honor society - in our council the OA Lodge (Kittan Lodge) represents over 1,000 active Scouts and Scouters. The OA attempts to recognize those Scouts that exemplify the Scout Oath and Law and does so by holding annual elections across all Council units allowing the youth of each unit to select the peers they feel best meet these standards.

The OA does have requirements for being eligible for election. They are as follows:

  • Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Have experienced 15 nights of camping while registered with a troop, crew, or ship within the two years immediately prior to the election. The 15 nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of at least five consecutive nights of overnight camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. Only five nights of the long-term camp may be credited toward the 15-night camping requirement; the balance of the camping (10 nights) must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps of, at most, three nights each. Ship nights may be counted as camping for Sea Scouts.
  • At the time of their election, youth must be under the age of 21, hold the Scouts BSA First Class rank, the Venturing Discovery Award, or the Sea Scout Ordinary rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor or Sea Scout Skipper, be elected by the youth members of their unit.

Candidates who are elected will be called out during the Mohawk District Spring Camporee April 27 at Rotary Scout Reservation. They then participate in Ordeal Weekend May 31-June 2, also at Rotary. If they are unable to attend that week, a Fall Ordeal will be held  Sept. 13-15 at Camp Wakpominee. Those who do not complete the Ordeal within a year of being elected must be re-elected.
